Raw food diets have been becoming increasingly popular in recent years and maybe it isn’t a bad thing. Extremely low in fat, 100% pure and natural, wholesome ingredients. It’s hard to imagine an eating plan that could be any better really.
But, as with all eating plans, there are some advantages and disadvantages.
What is Raw Food Diet?
A raw food diet is basically what the title says – eating raw foods. A typical diet will mainly consist of plenty of fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds, although as you’ll see below, this doesn’t apply to everyone eating raw food.
Any foods which have been cooked, frozen, preserved or treated with chemicals are generally no-go for raw foodists.
There are 3 main types of raw foodists:
1. Living foodists – the living foodist diet is mainly made up of active plants, such as fruit, vegetables, sprouted nuts and seeds.
2. Juicarians – who, as you may have guessed from the name, have a diet made up more or less entirely of juices.
3. Raw foodists who aren’t vegetarian or vegan, and include raw meats and raw (unpasteurized) dairy in their day to day diet.
How Do You Start A Raw Food Diet?
In one sense, it is very simple. Just eat fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds.
It’s not really quite that straightforward in reality though.
There is a huge fundamental shift in eating patters and eating habits, and it can take some getting used to mentally, let alone physically.
Removing any kind of cooking and processing from your diet is basically like detoxing your body, and there can be some side effects. After a few days you will feel much better for it, but the first few days can be a bit unpleasant to say the least.
One way to get around this is to build up to a raw food diet gradually. Start with 1 raw meal a day, after a couple of days, increase it and start to gradually transition that way. It can be easier on your body and on your mind.
Where Do You Find Raw Foods?
You can find raw food anywhere. Superstores, supermarkets, farmers markets – anywhere really. But why we really want to flush toxins, processing and any other artificiality from our bodies, going for organic foods is always best.
Yes, it is more expensive than “normal” produce, but you’re paying for quality, you’re paying for not having additives in your food. Why you should have to pay extra to NOT have additives in your food is a separate issue, but unfortunately organic does cost more.
You can start growing foods yourself, to keep bills down and giving you a new hobby as well.
If you stick with ‘standard’ produce, it’s not the end of the world – it is probably still a lot better for you than most things you could be eating. Going organic is really if you’re going for a 100% perfect optimal solution.
What Are The Advantages Of Raw Food?
As you’re not cooking, freezing, processing or tampering with food in any way, your foods keep all their vitamins, minerals, enzymes and good bacteria. It also helps with digestion and stops you from taking in chemicals and preservatives.
Many raw foodists say that a raw diet helps improve health, lose weight, lower risk of heart disease, improve digestion, give you more energy and give your skin a nice healthy glow.
What Are The Disadvantages?
The lack of protein and amino acids can be detrimental. On a raw food diet, protein is a bit hard to come by. You may need to take some protein and other nutritional supplements to balance this out.
The other issue, less from a health point of view, is that if you go out, unless you go to a specific specialist restaurant, your options are very limited. You can have several variations of salads (with no dressing of course) but beyond that, it isn’t easy.
