Turmeric is a bright yellow-orange spice that is very common in Indian and other Asian cuisine. It has a peppery warm flavour and a distinctive colour.
It has been used for centuries in Asia to help heal wounds and improve skin condition. But there are soooo many more benefits that turmeric can provide you with, and here are just some of them.
Turmeric For Weight Loss
Turmeric has a high amount of curcumin in it, which is strongly linked to weight management. This is because some studies have shown turmeric to increase your body’s thermogenesis – in other words, speed up your metabolism and help you burn more fat!
A good amount of curcumin can also help detox your liver – which is an important organ in the fight against the flab. A healthy working liver will contribute to a healthy working body.
Turmeric Has Lots More Health Benefits Though
Turmeric Reduces Risk Of Alzheimer’s
The antioxidants and anti-inflammatories in curcumin can help prevent the break down of amyloid plaque in the brain – which is one of the main contributors to ALzheimer’s.
“If the blood vessels remain less clogged, then certain parts of the brain might be fed more easily with oxygen and that would keep the brain functioning better,” explains Hourigan.
The Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at the University of California is currently planning clinical human trials.
Turmeric May Help Prevent Cancer
There are at least 30 studies which demonstrate curcumin to have an anti-tumour effect on the body, according to Jonny Bowden, author of The 150 Healthiest Foods On Earth.
Human research is a bit limited but a study was carried out in 2006 which shows curcumin inhibited human colon cancer and when combined with vegetables, it was shown that it may help treat or prevent prostate cancer.
This certainly does NOT mean turmeric can cure cancer, but adding in the antioxidants and anti-inflammatories to your daily nutrition won’t be doing you any harm!
Curcumin Reduces Risk Of Heart Disease & Stroke
Curcumin has been shown to lower cholesterol and prevent its build up in blood vessels. So it could stop a build up that could clock arteries which can lead to heart attacks or strokes.
Turmeric Reduces Inflammatory Diseases
In fact as curcumin is such a strong anti-inflammatory, some argue that it works better than anti-inflammatory medications, with no side effects. So ailments like eye inflammation and inflammatory bowel disease can be brought in check with a good dose of the bright yellow stuff!
Turmeric For Diabetics
There are several studies in animals that have shown turmeric can help regulate and control blood sugar levels, and there is a strong suggestion that this can have a huge positive impact for diabetics as well.
However of course if you use curcumin and then also your own diabetic medication, you could end up dropping blood sugar levels too low. So use with caution!
So there you have it.
Turmeric and it’s main component, curcumin, can have a huge positive impact on your weight, health and general well being. It really is the spice of life!
